For someone who lives to entertain… Lazy Susan’s are pretty brilliant! When I have company, I am a huge fan of setting out small bites or cheese trays….. whether I have one guest or five! But when you’re sitting at a table with said guest…. ultimately, there’s going to be a few snacks out of reach. Not everyone likes to reach across the table.. instead they’ll sit sadly, thinking “damn – I wish that big chunk of blue cheese would swing my way, so I could have a piece!” And then the Lazy Susan makes their life whole again, when they realize they can just spin that tray of snacks right around and dig in!!
I picked up 2 of these wooden lazy susans while out thrifting… And oddly enough, I had an identical one at home. They are so sad and plain. I’m sure piled with a ton of goodies, no one may notice this sad little tray… but I thought they deserved a spectacular life too! So… here’s the 1st of the 3 Lazy Susan transformations…. Rock Star Susan!

I painted the tray flat black… I really need to buy stock in black paint! Then I found Silver Studded Nailhead Trim
All worth it in the end. Now this is a cheese tray fit for a rock star! Susan – you’re looking good!!
To top Susan off… I was going for a Vampire worthy gothic cheese board, so I kept the food dark with some pops of color. For the cheese…. I used some veiny cheeses: blue cheese and an Irish Porter, some dark coated cheeses: Rosemary Goat and Merlot Bella Vitano, and then I added chunk of orange cheese for a pop of color (I forget what kind it was but there are tons of orange cheeses to choose from… worse case, grab a crumbling block of cheddar!). I mixed in mission figs, black plums, black grapes, blackberries –do you see a trend? 🙂 – and a pomegranate. I also added a bowl of large black olives and red peppadews, and topped the tray off with fig and olive crackers.
Note – don’t food directly on a painted surface…. either use a large doiley, or a non-toxic sealer.
