Not only is it near impossible to find black cake stands in a store (unless of course it’s Halloween… because why on earth would anyone want to serve anything on a black stand on any other day of the year?!?!? UGH.. don’t get me started!) ….but you’re certainly not coming across stands as beautifully glammed up as these! Lucky for you… you can make these yourself! Fuck the big box decorating stores!
That’s right … as promised, another cake stand project. I admit… I’m obsessed (Did you catch the DIY Black & Gold Cake Stand?). I love hosting dinners or parties, and I find that cake stands are not only an efficient use of space on a buffet, but they also offer a decorative element to whatever your theme or style is. For this theme… I decided on dark glamour… obviously!
I also love the versatility of a cake stand. Serve any kind of dessert… not just cakes. In fact… serve any kind of food! Or no food at all – these stands could hold your plates… or a buffet sign… or even floral decor! Think outside of the box and use them for other displays too…. Put a favorite object on display!
Candlesticks are one of my favorite things to pick up at thrift stores or garage sales. So many to choose from, and they cost next to nothing. These days I try to limit myself to the chunky ones, as I’ve found they work best with most projects. Just make sure when you’re choosing a candlestick for a project, that the base can carry the weight of whatever you’re putting on top. Tall and thin candlesticks can become top heavy and tip over. For this project, since the fringe would be hanging below the edge of the wooden top, I choose a tall candlestick, and a smaller square top.
What you’ll need
- Candlestick
- Square Wooden Plaque (make sure the plaque is thick enough to attach the fringe – I chose these Wooden Panels
because of their deep sides)
- Paint
- E6000
- Beaded Fringe
- Fray Check
- Hot Glue Gun & Glue
- Plexiglass Acrylic Sheet
- Plastic Cutting knife
- Clear Soft Dots (Bumbers)
because of their deep sides)1. Prep your candlestick. Clean, Sand, Remove appendages, etc. Mine had a candle spike that needed to be removed.
2. Paint your candlestick and wooden plaque
3. Once dry, using E600 glue, attach the candlestick to the underside of the plaque… ensuring the candlestick is centered. Allow to dry for 24 hours.
4. Measure around the sides of the plaque, and cut a length of fringe slightly longer to allow a bit of overlap when secured.
5. Trim any loose threads from the edge of your fringe, and use Fray Check to finish the ends. Allow to dry.
6. Using hot glue, secure the fringe along the side of the wooden plaque until the ends overlap. You may have to trim a couple strands of beads, so the fringe is even all around.
If you only intend to use this as a decorative display stand, you’re all set!! But if you intend to use these for any sort of food use whatsoever, you’ll need a removable, washable top to set the food on…. because thanks to the gorgeous fringe, these cannot be washed!
7. Using the knife, cut your plexiglass to the size of your square top… Using a flat edge, score the plexiglass with the knife over and over until the excess easily snaps off.
8. Attach to the top of the stand using a soft dot in each corner.
You can serve anything you’d like without concern of the stand becoming dirty. Just remove the plexiglass after use, and return it once washed and dry.
Now, go whip up a batch of your most wickedly decadent sweets and serve them in style!!
